What the research says
The evidence is strongest for short-term relief of tension headaches, migraine, long-term low back pain and neck pain. It can also give temporary relief of knee arthritis pain, alongside your usual treatment.
For other problems the research is less certain, and I’ll tell you that when we speak.
What is medical acupuncture?
Medical acupuncture is acupuncture practised by health professionals, and grounded in medical science.
Fine needles stimulate the nervous system, to support your body’s own pain-relieving and healing processes.
It uses the same needles as traditional Chinese acupuncture. The difference is in how the points are chosen. I choose them from your anatomy and from medical research.
I use my medical knowledge to understand your condition, and acupuncture to complement the healthcare you already have.
Your first appointment
It lasts an hour.
- A full history, and an examination if needed. About 15 minutes.
- A full acupuncture treatment. About 30 to 40 minutes.
- Before you leave, we agree a plan for what comes next.
Prices
Most people have 3 to 5 sessions, as the effects build over time. Some conditions need more. You can book one at a time, or pay less per session with a bundle.

Is it safe?
Most people have no side effects. Some get a small bruise, or feel tired or light-headed for a short time afterwards. Serious problems are rare.
I use sterile, single-use needles.

Common questions
Does it hurt?
The needles are much finer than the ones used for injections. Most people feel a dull ache or nothing at all.
Will it replace my usual treatment?
No. Keep taking your medicines and seeing your GP as normal. Acupuncture works alongside them.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. You can book directly.
How many sessions will I need?
Most people have 3 to 5 sessions, as the effects build over time. Some conditions need more. We’ll agree a plan at your first appointment.
What if I need to change or cancel?
You can move your appointment to another time up to 4 hours before, or cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before, from your confirmation email. With less notice, the session may be charged. If you’re unwell, let me know as soon as you can. I’m always flexible about illness.
Can I claim on my health insurance?
Some health insurance policies cover acupuncture. Check with your insurer before you book.
